Great post..
I bought ‘August & Everything After’, admittedly, because of the radio hit ‘Mr. Jones’ but found ‘Round Here’ (among others) instead. I was around 14 at the time and I could say it was the time I really discovered music on a deeper and personal level. It was a lot of ‘firsts’ for me (musical, personal, or otherwise) with that album.
Thanks for rekindling those memories.

Thanks for the well written piece. My first taste of the Counting Crows was when Raining in Baltimore was featured, I believe in its entirety, on an episode Homicide: Life on the Street. I am song tagged with that lately because there is a circus in town.

If there is one CC song I absolutely despise, it would be Mr. Jones.

I personally, see no depth whatsoever to this song. It seems very commercial to me. Totally made for radio.

I don’t know the Counting Crows very well but I like their music. First time I’ve listen to “Accindentally in love” I fallen in love with this song. Now I listen it at least once a day. I think it’s very uplifting, a great love song.

I’ve just listened to “Round Here”: very different from “Accidentally” but also great! I think I have to get some of their cds…

Hi, you linked me to your Blog on Livejournal (I'd made an icon), so I cam along and read this fabulous marathon of Crows Posts, which have quite frankly made my evening. They're such an amazing band, they have such an awesome presence in all their live work (and more than a hint of jam-band about them), and their studio work is so intracte.

Glad you were able to pinpoint the day you became a fan.

I'd like to say I've been a fan that long, but I was 3 years old at the time.

I found your blog after you commented on Saved By The Torso, and I'm glad I did.

I discovered Counting Crows about the same time you did. The lyrics on each of the songs on August and Everything After spoke to me; it was the most complete, most personal album I had ever heard. The lyrics of several songs on that CD helped me articulate lots of what I was feeling at the time, about religion, personal relationships and fitting in (or, why I might have wanted to fit in).

Anyway, I enjoyed your comments. A lot.

Does the subject matter of the songs affect you at all? “Round Here” is, I think, about runaways living on the street; “Perfect Blue Buildings” – one of my favorite – is about doing heroin in an abandoned building. That line “gotta get me a little oblivion, baby, try to keep myself away from myself and me” haunts me. I have problems with severe depression, and it perfectly captures the mood for me.

I bought the mtv/vh1 live album (Across a Wire) about the time it was released and to be honest, at the time, i wasn’t too impressed. I just listened to mulitple versions of “Round Here” and “Rain King”. Now that I have learned to appreciate this great band, I listen to both albums all the way through quite frequently. I love “Have You Seen Me Lately?”, both versions. I went to see the Counting Crows in concert last summer and disapointingly they did not play “Mr. Jones” but did play an at least ten minute version of “Round Here” and it was amazing. It was the “I am feathered” version which I have never heard before. Anyways, the Counting Crows are great. Can’t wait for the next one.
