Bad Christians and Bad Atheists
I Sold My Soul on eBay author Hemant Mehta has a blog called “Friendly Atheist”. Some of his posts are indeed of a friendly nature while others, especially recently it seems, are a bit less so.
Two recent entries are worth looking at:
Christians hurting Christianity
Hemant asks: “Have any of you (Christian or atheist or otherwise) had encounters with Christians who were well-meaning about sharing their faith, but actually ended up pushing you further away from Christianity?”
Hemant asks: “Have you ever met an atheist who pushed you away from atheism (whether you’re a religious or non-religious person)?”

I have met both kinds of people. I am confident that there are many well meaning christians. Kind people who simply want you to have everything they have gotten because of their belief. Yet, almost everytime I encounter such people I conclude that I much rather base my wordview on evidence. I am reminded of how little some peoples’ world view has to do with evidence and I think that is dangerous, for the persons themselves as well as for society.
Atheists on the other hand can often come across as arrogant and can be a bit to aggressive on some occassions in my opinion. I wouldn’t say that it drives me away from atheism it self, but perhaps away from atheists as a group.

i’m reminded of the passage in blue like jazz where don miller and some friends have a “confessional booth” at their college. when people came up to it (expecting the worst, i’m sure), miller and co. (in monk outfits no less) began to confess their sins & the sins of the Church to them. brilliant, i say.

People who’ve experienced the life-changing power of Jesus Christ naturally want to share it with others. When I became a Christian I thought it was so fantastic that in my exuberance and excitement I wanted to tell everyone about it whether they wanted to hear it or not. My mother was not impressed and thought I’d gone ‘off the deep end’ (as she said). The truth is that any form of encouragement encouraged me and any form of persecution also encouraged me. In many ways I was casting my pearls… I’m a little wiser now and wait for appropriate times to witness for Christ…

I’ve often told my non-believing friends, when they comment on an annoying Christian in our circles: “Just because he’s saved doesn’t mean he’s not a jerk!!!” It’s true. God has far more grace than I.

Met them both and to be honest – those things happen in life. Anyone that based anything on a one chance encounter might have to re-evaluate their personal value system (and get their brain checked at the same time).

If I may be so risque as to quote from 2 bumper stickers I have found to be off-color yet truthful:
1. “Jesus loves you – everyone else thinks you’re an a–hole!”
2. “Focus on you own damn family!”
