What would you call it based on the coverage you watched or listened to?

Inauguration – plain and simple …. a very good speech ….. actually an irritating question …
Dull.
Don’t get me wrong Abe, I agree it was a very good speech. What I was surprised at was that CBC was covering it like it was Gandhi accepting an Oscar and a Nobel Prize.
Obama is inspiring and charismatic enough to carry the event himself, all the extra hype is only going to make the first showing of his fallibility that much more disappointing.
Where did you watch or listen to it? The portions I heard on CBC were near deity worship in tone.
His falibility!? Never!
He is representative of a whole race that has been downtrodden and abused in that country for many years! The hype, in my opinion, is because fo how far America has come since Martin Luther first had his dream! Since Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat!
As someone who has gone through years of discrimination because of my cultural background, albeit on a much much lesser scale than black Americans, I can understand their pride and renewed hope in having one of their own on that platform today!!
Absolutely Hellen, I agree.
What I’m trying to get at here is that there is legitimate, deserved hype for this historic event that is above partisan loyalties.
BUT the good vibes from that have flooded into another level of hype that no human can live up to. This is not Obama’s fault – Americans have been stuck with a bit of buffoon for 8 years so almost anyone would look good as an alternative.
As much as I disagree with his pro-abortion policies, I hope he accomplishes much of what he wants to do.
So back to the reason for the post: I’m not asking if your opinion is that he being made President, King, or Saviour.
I’m asking: what network did you watch the inauguration on and what was the bias and did you feel the hype was overblown?
Ah , that restatement of what you are actually asking is much clearer and sounds different than what seemed to be implied in the original.
I did not watch CBC but switched between a couple of other stations where I saw an Inauguration at which America… Black and non-Black…was proud of how far they’d come to be able to have this man as President.
I watched it mostly on Global and a bit on CTV. CTV was positively giddy. It was almost embarrassing to watch. For them it was much more than an inauguration. They were anointing a king of the world. Global was more subdued… all they could talk about was the size of the crowd. They didn’t offer much in the way of political commentary.
bush, the more time goes by, will become much less of a “buffoon” in the eyes of history. was he a great president? nah, but he did more good than he’s currently given credit for and is vilified for more than he deserves blame.
as for obama, pretty much the opposite. he’s not done anything, yet praise abounds.
as for the hype, some of it is good. we have elected a (half) black man as president. and that’s a good thing, if only to prove to some that it is possible to overcome hate (or the perception of hate) but the race haters are still hating and race baiters are still baiting. just check out the prayer from rev. Lowery today:
“….help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right.”
so, i, a white man, have never embraced what is right? ok. sure. so glad we’re post-racial now.
sigh…
I actually only listened to the speech on CBC Radio – the online CTV feed kept breaking up. I did not listen to the commentary afterwards.
CBC does have a liberal slant … it is to be expected that they are going to load up the priase for a new liberal leader.
I think Anna Maria usually does a very good job of walking the line – asking good questions and not being one sided.
From my prospective he was being made President.
Michael – give the chance – would you have voted for him?
This comment from John Andres via Facebook:
“”Historic no doubt. But as Michael explains in his above link, the coverage of some news outlets makes you wonder. He is over hyped and and you get the impression that many think Obama alone will change everything for the better and it will happen over night. I feel sorry for some who will be disappointed when he can’t measure up to the fairytale ending they imagined. In all the hype their setting themselves up for disappointment. But I thought his speech was great and its awesome that they now have a president who can carry himself well and is a great motivator. And he’s African-American to boot! Good for them!”
I didn’t watch much of it, I got sick of the hype very quickly. He is a man not God, he will make mistakes you can be sure of that, they will be overlooked and excused by the liberals.
He sounds good now but he hasn’t faced a challenge yet, wait and see.
Considering the lack of otherwise interesting news I couldn’t see what else they would be covering. This was the first day of what can of what may turn out to be a decade under a new leader. Canadians can’t escape the influence of the US, like it or not.
All the coverage I saw (on CBC) was pretty much as it happened with a little cometary here and there. The really annoying bit was when they kept on cutting to this ditz reporter stationed at a public school. It was a failed bit considering the overall quality of the coverage.
No man, no matter how perfect he is, can live up the expectations currently being placed on President Obama.
I feel sorry for him and wish him the best of luck. All he can do is try. But I must say that in the election this fall, he carried himself with more integrity than any other modern politician that I can recall. And that is a good thing in my books.
I hope he has more successes than failures.
