Session One – Leading In A New Reality (Bill Hybels)

“I’m not sure that we’ll even experience ‘The Old Normal’ ever again. We are leading in a new reality. Storms provide the perfect conditions for greatness to emerge.”

[I have never seen Hybel’s speak live before. He reads a lot. That surprises me.]

    Philosophical Change

- Oct 08 – stock market crash hit Willow hard.
- Rogue wave situation
- Ministry changed course from previous plans

Do we still believe that the church is the hope for the world?
Do we still believe that that God will intervene in miraculous ways?

Church returned to Acts model… humble yourselves and allow those around you to help you.

[We have just started something similar at our church called God’s Gift Basket. This is a second offering we take where people can both give if they have extra and take if they have need.]

Pour as much ministry as possible on people – Full Treatment… everything must be anointed by the Holy Spirit.

The church being the church will move people closer to Christ

Kingdom Economics
Revenue goes down and needs go up
Planning becomes guesswork

In a crisis, the most valuable resource is time. If finances are bad, there is no time for consideration and action is taken hastily. (Cash is king) Organizations need to have cash reserves of 25% of annual revenue.

Ask your team:

1. When revenue crashes, which ministries do we stop doing first?
2. Which ones would we NEVER stop doing?
Sometimes this can lead to staff reductions.

10% of Willow’s budget goes to “Winds of the Spirit” initiatives. Stuff that pops up after budgeting.

God works through people who are completely yielded to him.
Every key seat filled with an on-fire, spirit-led person + one person in training for the same. Are we developing back up people for each of the key positions? We need to.

The New Reality

Don’t keep telling yourself that what’s happening is temporary… this might be “The New Reality”.

Hybels is really pouring himself out here… being transparent.

We fall into a state of depletion – replenishment strategy needs to be in place. Hybels was at a place where, “The pace at which I’m doing the work of God is destroying the work of God in me.” I hear you, brother.

Rom. 8:6 – Life and Peace
This is the replenishment strategy – we lead best when we’re filled up. A lot of us are working in a state of depletion.

[What’s my replenishment strategy?]

Social, relational, task orientation must all be rearranged. Piles of paper cry out for attention that belongs to God.

Temptation is to work 24/7 to solve every problem, eat badly, not exercise, etc…

[Ok – getting a little emotional now – me… and Bill]

Have God-time away from leadership temptations. The best thing you can bring to the table is a full bucket, a fresh spirit, and a grace-filled demeanor… time with God leads to biblical optimism.

Closing question: what do your followers and colleagues see when they look at you these days? A person full of life and peace or someone who is exhausted and fearful?
