Worship the One Who Does the Work (Col. 2:10-15)(Sermon Audio)

God does all the work in our salvation. That’s not to say that there is no effort required of us after salvation, but the bible tells us to work OUT our salvation, not work FOR our salvation. We can’t work for our salvation; God does all the work that needs to be done.

Watch Out For Deceivers (Col. 2:6-10)(Sermon Audio)

Every era and every culture has its own philosophers and false teachers who try to lead people away by using the name of Christ as part of their presentation. This is not new. The city of Colossae had it’s competing philosophers and the church there – just like our church now – was always in danger of being taken captive, of being led astray, of being infiltrated by deceptive philosophies promoted by skilled deceivers.

So Paul says “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” We are to walk in Christ; deceivers want us to walk away from Christ. They want to take us captive, basically to kidnap us. They want to set a trap with some tasty bait and then keep us in a cage and then consume us.

How a Loving Pastor Prays For His People (Col. 1:1-14)

Screen Shot 2014-09-12 at 2.54.40 PMWhen the Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Colossian church there were two dominant emotions involved: gratitude and concern. He wrote this letter as an encouragement to relatively new believers. Unlike the church in Corinth, the church in Colossae seemed to be doing pretty well. They received the truth, listened to the truth, and were obeying the truth. Paul encourages them to continue in the truth they have received – he’s grateful for this. But he also warns them about harmful non-Christian religious influences – this is his concern.

Dear ISIS Army…

Dear ISIS army,

“Rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good.

But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.” (Romans 13:3-4)

Life in the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-31)(Sermon Audio)

1 cor 12_27 graphicThink about this: Jesus Christ is not only willing to be known and to represent Himself, He is willing to be known and represented by us! He asks us to be His representatives, His ambassadors.

To be sure, we do a poor job of this sometimes, maybe even often. He knew that we would, but chose to arrange things this way anyway. He knows you’re not perfect, and he invites you to represent Him anyway. And if He is so gracious with us, shouldn’t we be at least that gracious with ourselves and with each other? Shouldn’t we put away both kinds of faulty thinking – the “I’m not good enough to serve” thinking and the “I’m too good to serve” thinking?

Whatever gift you have, whatever position God has assigned you to, know that this gift and this assignment is for the good of the whole church. So don’t hold back, either out of fear or out of selfishness, but use the gifts God has given you and serve in the way he has assigned you.
